Visual Art Design Level 1

This course has a strong digital focus and explores integration and experimentation using mixed media photography and illustration in an art design context. Students will explore and artistically respond to concepts around whakapapa, whakawhanaungatanga, Turangawaewae and what it means to be a kaitiakaitanga. Students will learn how to use a SLR camera, Photo Shop skills, and study Contemporary and historic New Zealand artists and ideas.  This course lays a solid foundation to level 2 and 3 design and photography and supports pathways outside of school in marketing, internet design, teaching, communication and management.  

You can only take either Visual Art or Visual Art Design, you cannot take both.

Course Overview

Term 1
Course introduction / introduction to the art computer suite / photoshop
Standard 1.3 Visual Arts - level 1 standard 90915 (6 credits)
Use drawing conventions to develop work in more than one field of practice (illustration and photography)

Term 2
Standard 1.2 Visual Arts - level 1 standard 90914 (4 credits)
Use drawing methods and skills for recording information using wet and dry media (mixed media combined with digital photographic processes)

Standard 1.5 Visual Arts -level 1
Standard 90917 (4 credits)
Produce a finished work that demonstrates skills appropriate to cultural conventions (poster design)

Term 3
Standard 1.4 Visual Arts - level 1 standard 90916 (12 credits)
Produce a body of work informed by established practice, which develops ideas, using a range of media.

Term 4
Complete 1.4

Recommended Prior Learning

Not essential but a willingness to learn and work hard is essential

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Cameras can be booked but a laptop would be beneficial so students can work at home alongside classroom.

Pathway

To be a visually literate person with the ability to manipulate photoshop is hugely advantageous. It can lead to all sorts of career opportunities in things like marketing, design (interior / internet / business / retail / publications etc) communications and more . . .
