Creative Materials (Y10)

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs R. Grey.

Come and work with fabric and other soft materials to create items you have helped to design. This course is largely driven by you, so you can develop your own ideas and passions whilst learning skills to last a lifetime. Garment/ clothing construction using commercial patterns, tie-dyeing, plushies (toys), sports bags and gifts and a look at local New Zealand fashion trends are just some ideas. We will have the chance to look at up-cycling and repurposing fabrics.  If you enjoy being creative, this is the course for you. This course builds on the knowledge you started to gain in Year 7 and 8.

Projects are yours to keep.

Course Overview

Term 1
1. The basics: Create a simple textile item to refresh your skills
2. Design, plan and make: Make your own simple pattern according to a brief / Construct the item you have designed.
3. Repurposing and upcycling: Get creative with what we can find in the op shops or from home.

Term 2
1. The basics: Commercial Patterns
2. Use a commercial pattern to create an item of clothing . This can be for yourself, or someone else.
3. Take a look at New Zealand designers. A visit to the cultural ideas behind modern NZ fashion. Old customs in a modern context.

Recommended Prior Learning

Most of you have had some experience of this subject during your Yr 7/8 Technology classes. 

This is all you need to step up into the wonderful world of working with soft materials/ textiles.

If you are keen, so am I.  Come and have a go. 

Pathway

This course could lead you to a career in Fashion and Design, Costuming, Upholstery and Motor Trimming, associated industries such as pattern making a prototyping for fashion designers. There are many opportunities both here and overseas. it is also a great course to take if you really enjoy sewing and crafting with a view to solving problems. You will gain skills to last a lifetime.
